Dj Kay Slay - I Dare You

Side A
Side B

Dodgy bootleg this one (and by that I mean it's been made recently..)

  1. This was acquired on eBay correct? I asked the seller on there if his tapes were made recently or from the 1990’s and he said they are all from the 90’s and stored in his basement ever since he closed his mixtape shops down. This answer convinced me to purchase a handful of cassettes from him, so I hope he was telling the truth, as I could have saved some money otherwise.

  2. Weirdly it was bought from facebook - but the bootleg comment i made was because i recognised it as a bootleg from the very seller you are no doubt talking about. They are far from genuine, sadly. My issue with that is i am getting a copy of a copy - the audio is far from perfect. Is the individual telling the truth about once owning a shop? I find it doubtful but that's just me

    1. I’m not sure if he is telling the truth, but his exact words were “hi, all of these are from the 90's, these have all been in my basement
since I closed my mixtape stores in NYC.“ I’ll have to wait and see what everything looks like when the tapes come in, but the thing he does have going for him is that he definitely has the variety and selection of tapes of someone who may have once owned a shop. But whether or not he’s recently copying his collection for sale or copied them back 20+ years ago, I don’t know. I did notice though, that I made an offer for four tapes, including one that “had 1 left” and he invoiced me for all four tapes on one particular auction that I clicked “contact seller” on. But looking at the auction for one of the four I bought, he never took the auction down for the one that had 1 copy left. So either he’s got a handful and is selling a few at a time or he literally has an unlimited amount.

  3. I'm here to enlighten you guys on how the mixtape game worked. A DJ would make a master tape, then sell it to stores/distributors for $100-500, sometimes more, depending on how big that DJ was. The store would then duplicate tapes as needed. During the late 90's is when DJ's started producing their own tapes and wholesaling to stores, but some stores would just continue to purchase a master. Every store, and every DJ did business differently. I can tell you, because I was there. It wasn't unusual for a store to take a master and then order a box of 200 copies of that 1 specific tape, sometimes more, sometimes less, again depending on how hot that DJ was. It wasn't uncommon to go to a store and say HEY I WANT THIS TAPE, and for them to tell you "Come back in an hour" - so the tape could be made for them. We're talking about street released cassettes/cds. This wasn't retail, industry produced albums. It was some of the best times in NYC, the golden era of hip hop. I made a lot of money then, I did duplication for damn near everyone, I also had several stores of my own, and supplied tapes to stores across the country that did not have access to the DJs in New york. It was a BUSINESS, key word. It's cool that everyone here still enjoys the tapes. Please stop knocking how someone is making their money. Hope this clears things up, thank you.

  4. Yeah but things don't really add up, and you're just muddying the waters. I mean the fact that you know about this website and have written a comment is frankly bizarre. Not buying it!

  5. That guy on ebay selling all those tapes is just selling recent home made copies.
I've even seen some fake covers being reproduced that I designed for myself and included in a trade with somebody. Not sure where he got them from, but I was like damn, this guy selling superfake shit lol.
